Kenya has long been listed among the dream destinations for travelers from all over the world. The East African country is famous first and foremost for its vast expanses of national parks, which host world-class safari excursions year-round. Many other adventure seekers visit Kenya for the hustle and bustle of Nairobi, the country’s cultural and financial capital, which boasts wonderful restaurants throughout its food districts. Other travelers who are looking for a beach vacation tend to flock towards the expansive coast, which feeds into the Indian Ocean.
Thanks to the demand, airlines, and airports across the globe have begun implementing more direct and frequent flights to Kenya, making it easier than ever to visit this beautiful country. In direct response to this demand, Kenyan travel authorities have also updated their system, introducing an eVisa to travelers from many countries around the world, including Sweden. Now Swedish passport holders can apply for and receive permission to travel to Kenya entirely online.
Do Swedish Citizens Need a Visa for Kenya?
Yes, every person with a Swedish passport who is aiming to travel to Kenya for any reason, whether it be for business, tourism, leisure, or medical purposes must hold their own visa. The good news is that since the eVisa is electronic, and thus applied for online, there is no longer any need to visit an embassy or consulate inside Sweden, as the application can be completed from anywhere with internet access.
Kenya Visa Requirements for Swedish Citizens
The thought process behind designing the application for the Kenya eVisa for Swedish citizens was to make it as intuitive and easy to follow as possible. With that said, there are still a number of requirements that each applicant must provide authorities upon filling in the application. Here is a list of some of the things you can expect to be asked for:
- A valid passport either from Sweden or another eligible country with at least six months’ validity
- The personal information from the passport photo page
- At least one blank page in the passport for the visa
- A recent (last six months) digitalized color photograph
- A basic outline of a travel itinerary that you are planning to follow
- A return ticket to Sweden or else other proof of onward travel from Kenya
- A debit or credit card in order to pay the application fee
Apply for Kenyan Visa in Sweden
The Kenya eVisa application for Swedish citizens is comprised mostly of questions asking for the information detailed above. In addition, the application may ask more personal questions regarding the health and security history of the applicant.
The typical turnaround time for a response following a submitted application is between two and three business days. Once issued, Swedish citizens have 90 days to enter Kenya before their visa becomes invalid and they must start the process over again. Once in Kenya, Swedish citizens are allowed a stay of up to 30 days in Kenya. In the event that you wish to extend your stay, you may do so by visiting Nyayo House 20th floor, Kenyatta Avenue/Uhuru Highway. The Kenya visa can be extended twice, once for 2 months and again for 3 months.
Types of Kenya eVisas Available
The Kenyan eVisa for travelers from Sweden is a single-entry visa. This means that should you leave the country for any reason, you must apply for a separate visa if you wish to re-enter, even if your original tourist visa still had validity on it.
The single-entry visa is the one to select should you want to visit Kenya for tourism, leisure, business or for medical purposes.
If you are transiting through Kenya and don’t plan on leaving the airport then it is not necessary to apply for a transit visa. However, for stays outside of the airport under 72 hours, it is required to have a transit visa. Any stay above 72 hours must be accompanied by a standard tourist visa.
